　　苏菲（桑德里娜·伯奈尔 Sandrine Bonnaire饰）在中产阶级乐里芙家做女佣，她想方设法隐藏着自己不识字的奥秘。性情外向的苏菲心里很是敏感，事事留心不犯过失，并获得了仆人家的认同。乐里芙一家对苏菲彬彬有礼，同时也昭示出主仆间的分歧品级。
　　
　　在镇上的邮局，苏菲熟悉了同属贫民阶级的珍（伊莎贝尔·于佩尔 Isabelle Huppert饰）。珍对有钱人布满了扭曲的愤恨心理，成为苏菲的好友后，她从没有停止过煽惑苏菲，让她与富人阶级破裂。冲突一步步走向无可和谐的境界，苏菲的奥秘在乐里芙家曝了光，和谐的外壳瞬间倒坍，珍和苏菲的抵挡如同狂风骤雨……
